Rename the Prince William cup to Ray Gravell

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/cambriaraygravell/

Quote:
We the undersigned petition the Welsh Rugby Union to rename the so-called Prince William Cup, the RAY GRAVELL CUP, a far more appropriate title, honouring a great Welsh hero and patriot who lived a life for Wales and Welshness, and who personified a glorious era of Wales's national game.

Yr ydym ni sydd wedi taro ein henwau isod yn galw ar Undeb Rygbi Cymru, i newid enw yr hyn elwir gan rai Cwpan Tywsog William i GWPAN RAY GRAVELL. Enw llawer mwy addas ar gyfer cwpan sy'n gysylltiedig a gem gendlaethol Cymru. Fydd hyn yn arwydd o barch i gawr o Gymro a gwladgarwr wnaeth gymaint dros Gymru a Chymreictod.

A description of the cup, on the WRU website reads as follows:

The hammered edges spiralling around the trophy represent the landscape and mountains of Wales, while inscribed on it are some words of one of Nelson Mandela's most stirring quotes: The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Need we say more? Er serchus cof - Ray Gravell. Cymru am byth!

This should be done immediately.... Ive had the privilege of speaking briefly to Ray at one of the Newport Gwent Dragons home games and I couldn't have met a nicer person.

His death hit Welsh Rugby big time down here, and it shows the respect the man had, that at the Dragons away tie in the EDF cup at Newcastle - they had a minutes silence and it was impeccably observed.

R.I.P Ray

Nor was I, but it seems that he was big in Wales. He played, and did a lot of the Welsh language coverage. Anything better than Billy who doesn't even support Wales.

Thanks for this, it's nice to hear a personal anecdote. He's not long gone, apparently, having died at the end of October.

Aye it was very sudden, He was on holiday in spain, 3 days in and had a heart attack. He Had just got over the shock of having to have his leg amputated below the knee earlier on this year..... but typical Ray was back on Scrum V and S4C doing his job and laughing about it.

Petition Update
Dec 2007

PETITION UPDATE

Thank you - Diolch o galon i chi!

Cambria’s Petition to rename the Prince William Cup the Ray Gravell Cup has reached 4700+ signatures.

Help us to get it over 5000. One final push will do it! Please forward this to all your friends and get them to sign up ... HERE

If we reach our target, the petition will be printed and bound as a gift to the Gravell family in memory of Grav.
Ray Gravell Cup

The people of Wales have responded in fiery fashion to the petition to rename the WRU cup to honour the memory of national hero Ray Gravell. AMs, MPs, writers, singers and poets from all over Wales and beyond have joined hundreds of fellow Welsh men and women by adding their signatures to the list, and many have made comments which are, in themselves, powerful and moving tributes to a great patriot, gentleman and sportsman. And the support continues ...

Congratulations also to the Facebook group tribute to Grav which has over 16,000 members. If you are a Facebook member sign in to this group as well.

From Cambria magazine

Quote:
Thank you - Diolch o galon i chi!

Cambria’s Petition launched for the Ray Gravell Cup has well exceeded 5000 signatures. Many have added comments and personal memories, heart-warming evidence of the love and respect which was felt for him.

Those collected so far have been bound and will be presented to his wife and family by David Gravell at the Cofio Grav concert which is being held on 2nd March at the Lyric, Carmarthen.

David Gravell and Mansel Thomas first organised the concert with the backing of Ray himself, at that time called Cyngerdd Grav, to raise awareness of diabetes. After his death it was decided that the concert should go ahead anyway and that all monies raised should go to charity. All those asked to participate have agreed and will do so for nothing.

The line up promises to be astounding.
