Some of you will agree that Andrew Murray was the unacknowledged architect of Stirling Bridge, but what does Roslin say about John Comyn?

I was going to follow this question up with one about an alternative-history Balliol version of the Bruce-Randolph-Douglas command group (Comyn-de Soulis-Wallace)? However, if this was going to happen then did it not have ample opportunity to appear before 1305?

The Comyn-Bruce distrust had a lot to do with it I suspect. Neither of them really trusted Balliol either, as he had let Scotland down badly, and wasn't much of a figure to rally round. Wallace was too lowly to have a great influence on the nobility. Too much in-fighting going on during the period between 1303-05, and then Wallace was betrayed and murdered. Comyn was dead too by February 1306, leaving Bruce as the only real potential candidate or military leader. Took a long time for him to establish himself as such, and Comyn was facing the same long haul as he wasn't greatly trusted by many of the other nobles - a bit of a grasping man who obviously fancied his chances of becoming, if not king, then the king-maker. Following Bruce's victory, Comyn was effectively written out of history. Stalin didn't invent the 'purging' of people from the official records!

This is probably the crux of why he could not succeed.
