A Cornwall councillor has defected from the county's Liberal Democrats to Cornish devolution party Mebyon Kernow.

The move, by Penzance Central councillor Tamsin Williams, brings the number of Mebyon Kernow members on the 123-seat Conservative-Independent led unitary authority up to six.

She said she had moved to a party "free from the vested interests that dominate the London-based parties".

She has served on the unitary council since it was formed in 2009.

She served on the former Cornwall County Council from 2001 to 2009.

Commenting on her decision to join MK, Cllr Williams said:

“I believe that now is a crucial period for Cornwall and its future. I am excited to be a member of Mebyon Kernow – a political party free from the vested interests that dominate the London-based parties.

“After a decade as a member of the Liberal Democrats, it has become increasingly obvious to me that many of Cornwall’s problems are a consequence of bad decisions made by the London parties.

In West Cornwall, Penzance Central division on Cornwall Council now has a Mebyon Kernow councillor following the defection to the party of Tamsin Williams from the Liberal Democrats. A day later and Callington took its Mebyon Kernow membership to three when Cllr Maria Coakley joined the party to add to Cllrs Andrew Long and Chris Thomas who also represent the party on the Town Council.
