OK some explanation. The file I sent to Montrose is a div X type compressed avi file. That means although it is only 618 megabytes it is still very good quality (much better than the youtube or indeed standard Sky broadcast quality).
The reason for creating that file rather than just raw dumping the DVD capture (several gigabytes) is that
1. It can fit on a CD (cheap as chips)
2. Copying is much faster.
Most modern (i.e. bought in the last 3 years) DVD players, will play it. Downside is that older DVD players won't play it.
OTOH with most folk having a computer if their DVD doesn't play it they can watch it on their PC.
Hope that clarifies things a wee bit.
BTW we seem to have attracted a full time resident Brit on the youtube forum. Quelle surprise.
I'm just posting again to give another thank-you to Montrose who sent me it, as my Dad now has it and has seen it and my reason for quoting the above, esp. the bit I emboldened, is merely to remark that, though the techy bits are beyond me, I am pretty sure my parents' DVD thingwie is
over 3 years old, yet the DVD played perfectly. (DVD player is called "Cello some-number-or-other, and does have a slightly old-ish and cheap-ish look to it, so I'm dead pleased that Montrose's DVD played well on it.) Just posting in case this wee factoid is of interest to anyone else who might have an old-ish machine.
Heheh, Dad's reaction involved "terrible that this was carefully not shown on normal telly - wonder how we can get this out to more people?" "Um, no Dad, your machinery will not write DVDs." "Oh. :( Are you sure?" "Yes, Dad, am sure. Honest."
