Bang on fifer, the man is an arse, orkney and shetland though are two different cases, orcadians seem to be jointly proud of their Scots and Norse heritage, while in shetland,Norse seems to hold sway,it would be a sad day for Scotland if orkney left, though don't think they would.Personally,i'd let shetland go,they couldnt care less bout Scotland.

Tavish Scott is thinking about oil revenues. he thinks if Shetland and Orkney were to be Independent of mainland Scotland it would effect the rights of oil revenues coming to Scotland. He is most likely looking at Shetland and Orkney to being a similar circumstance as the Falklands flooding it with Brits in fact I am sure there are quite a lot of Brits up there already.

Cornwall has a proper nationalist movement better developed than the northern Isles but they choose to ignore.

Scott was trying to make mischief for the First Minister. I suspect that he (alone) may have considered his suggestions amusing. Their sense of humour is very different from ours. Don't take it too seriously. He even suggested that the Western Isles might want to join with the Northern in going their own way.

This idea was floated in the seventies so why aren't we wise to it?

don't worry about this - it's kind of backfiring as the island councils while looking for more powers have inadvertently become standard bearers of independence - taking more powers from Westminster to Scotland and constantly praising the merits of self-determination - its great to see this turned on its head :)

they would be classed as an enclave under international law and only have waters with a 12 mile limit and not the 200 miles of continental shelf..
so he blowing non existent smoke up people arses with that one.

There is a map on Newsnet of the area of seabed the Northern Isles would fall heir to, under International law if they were Independent. It's not very big.
